It’s been quite some time since our last Lumi Love Club and a lot has happened in the world since then. So when we stumbled across an Instagram page with the most gorgeous calming and grounding vibes we just had to know more about the lovely person who created it. Courtney created Bend as a space to encourage others to look after themselves both mentally and physically and to provide them with a means to do so. Do yourself a favor and take some time to scroll through Courtney’s Instagram and website - you will feel better for it we promise.
Tell us about yourself and the story of Bend by Courtney.
My name is Courtney Love - I'm a mum, wife & owner of Bend. I have a beautiful 2-year-old son and have been with my sweetheart for 12 years. My business is solely focused on mindfulness. Something everyone can benefit from. I run yoga & meditation classes, have a 30-day yoga-inspired, self-discovery program and have designed a range of eco-friendly cork yoga props.
I began practicing yoga 8 years ago when my life revolved around my career in the media industry. I loved my job, but I had absolutely no work-life balance, was completely over-worked, tired, and constantly on edge. I felt like I didn't have the tools I needed to keep my mental health in-check and I was determined to find them. That's when I really began to focus on yoga & meditation, and it was an absolute game-changer. I knew I wanted to share everything I had learnt so I could help others, and that's how Bend was born.
Any advice for anyone out there thinking of starting a business or a brand?
Authenticity is key. There are millions of people out there, but no one quite like you. If you are truly passionate about what you do, and genuinely want to make a difference, then you can't fail. Starting a business isn't easy, but when you find something that you love, it's easy to feel motivated.
Where do you find your inspiration?
I am inspired by people. Real people. My inspiration doesn't come from scrolling through Instagram or Pinterest (although I do love a good scroll at times) it comes from connecting and talking with others. When we feel comfortable opening up, we find that so many other people are experiencing something similar to us. My inspiration comes from real life stories and those brave enough to share them.
The hardest part of starting out / being a business owner and how you overcame any challenges/stay motivated?
My business is made up of a few different components. When I first started designing my products, the hardest part was tackling the logistics. So much goes on behind the scenes. Everything from finding the right graphic designer and supplier, to organising freight, shipping, packaging, websites and so much more. I love the creative side of my business, but not so much the logistical side. I also find it challenging to balance mum-life with business-life. The balancing act is difficult, but I am slowly getting there.
Tell us about your AM routine e.g. skin products, routines and rituals?
I am huge on morning routines. A strong routine sets you up for a good day. My morning routine doesn't start with my skincare, it starts with mindfulness. I don't touch my phone when I first wake up. Scrolling through social media or the news first thing in the morning creates cognitive overwhelm and sets you up for a less-productive day. I try to wake up before my son, sit in silence for 15 minutes and write my to-do list for the day. I start my morning with lemon & warm water, a green juice of some sort and of course a coffee. I also aim to do a 10-minute meditation & 30-minute yoga flow every morning before opening my laptop and tackling my emails.
And now your PM routine?
I have a two-year-old, so nights tend to be a little hectic. However, once Hudson is asleep, I can focus a little more on myself. After my shower, I’ll pop on my night creams. I’m using AM Skincare right now and absolutely adore it. Every night I use the Pure Gold Oil which is Seabuckthorn oil blended with vitamin E, avocado, and grape seed oil. I also use the Soft Release Lotion which is a papaya enzyme. I put my phone away about 1 hour before I get into bed and always do a 10-15 meditation before falling asleep.
Three skin care, beauty, or wellness items you couldn't bear to live without?
My eco cork yoga mat, face oil and tinted moisturiser.
What does self-love/self-care mean to you? Is it an important part of your day or something that may fall by the wayside? I think turning 30 was a real turning point for me. My self-care used to fall by the wayside when I was younger, but as I have got older, I have realised the importance of it. Looking after yourself physically and mentally is vital. You can’t pour from an empty cup, and I truly believe that looking after yourself makes you a better wife, mother and friend.
